The challenge was to design a two storey retail unit with uninterrupted access from the main concourse without any significant disruption to passenger flow on one of the country’s busiest commuter stations. The structure is supported on strengthened sections of the original platform whilst the entrance required the existing Gateline to be reconfigured and the girder trusses carrying the high level sign boards to be extended to a new support to allow existing columns to be removed. This Boots retail unit was one of the largest buildings constructed on a station platform while the station was in full operation.
